A new ferromagnetic ferroelectric compound Bi2NiMnO6 was synthesized. Bulk samples were prepared under high pressure at 6 GPa. The crystal structure is a double perovskite with Ni2+ and Mn4+ ions ordered in a rock-salt configuration. A significant distortion with noncentrosymmetry (C 2) of the structure allows a spontaneous polarization at room temperature. Ni2+–O–Mn4+ magnetic paths lead to ferromagnetism with ferromagnetic Curie temperature of about 140 K. Other examples of multiferroic materials, such as Bi2CoMnO6 and Bi2CuMnO6, are also reported. Bi2NiMnO6 thin film samples epitaxially grown on SrTiO3 substrates were also successfully synthesized by a pulsed-laser deposition technique.
