In order to study the solidification process along thickness direction in polymer solution coating, the weight and the shrinkage stress of polystyrene(PS)/toluene solution coated on a glass substrate were in situ monitored during solvent evaporation under a fixed drying condition (20oC). As shown in Fig.1, we analyzed the change of solution weight and found a bending point of its changing rate corresponding to the solidification point of the solution in surface region (t1). On the other hand, the solidification point at the interfacial region between the film and the substrate (t3) was evaluated as the starting point of the shrinkage stress development. From these results, we proposed a model of solidification process of the solution cast under the condition of this study (Fig.2). The effects of drying condition on solidification process were also studied.
