It is known that the plastic deformation capacity of I-shaped beams is significantly improved by restraining the upper flange. However, a systematic
buckling design method that properly considers the stiffening effect of the slab has not been established. This study clarifies the effect of the
continuous restraint condition of the upper flange on the plastic deformation capacity of I-shaped beams and proposes a method for evaluating plastic
deformation performance. In addition, the stiffness and buckling strength of the upper flange restraints for the required plastic deformation capacity
of the beams are shown from previous experiments.
